The New York Times has
just published its second op-ed in a couple of months about how Israel
is so mean to gay people, with an analogy being made to ethnic
cleansing. It just so happens that this op-ed was published on the very
same day that my family held a reception for our interior decorator to
show off his excellent work and to help him get new clients. He and his
boyfriend were there as were a number of his
gay friends and the lesbian couple upstairs. All of these people are
living perfectly normal lives in Israel; all of them would face violent
attack or murder in any other country in the Middle East if they openly
showed their "lifestyle."
As
I've noted before the bashing of Israel in that newspaper has become so
ridiculous that it should have zero credibility. There is just no
relationship to reality in it. The exquisite care taken not to cover--or
to underplay or excuse--very real stories on the other side
(Palestinian Authority, PA, corruption and repression; daily denial of
Israel's right to exist and incitement to violence in the PA media; and
open antisemitism and calls for genocide from
Hamas, etc., has gotten to the point when one can only respond by
laughing at these journalistic crimes.
The
coverage of Israel in much of the American mass media is now on a level
with the reporting on the United States that existed in the Soviet
Union. I promised not to waste time on this issue any more but given the
coincidence of this latest journalistic atrocity I couldn't stop
myself. I will now return to covering the real Middle East.
